KABUL, Afghanistan – UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie today voiced deep concern for the tens of thousands of civilians caught up in two separate and fast-unfolding emergencies: Côte d'Ivoire and Libya.

"As we witness these newest crises unfold in west and north Africa, it is critical that all parties respect the fundamental right of people in danger to flee to safety – whether civilians caught in conflict in their own country or refugees and asylum seekers caught in new conflicts," Jolie said. "All I'm asking is that civilians be protected, and not targeted or harmed."

In Côte d'Ivoire, fierce fighting in the Abobo district of Abidjan and clashes in the west over the past few days have blocked access for humanitarian organizations and brought the country perilously close to all-out civil war. Thousands of people have been displaced in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire's commercial hub, and refugees have been streaming across the country's western border into Liberia in unprecedented numbers. Eastern Liberia is already dealing with more than 70,000 Ivorians who have arrived there since the presidential election of late November.

At the same time, UNHCR is worried for thousands of refugees, asylum-seekers, and irregular migrants still inside Libya and in circumstances of considerable danger. Few of these have been able to make it out of Libya and into either Tunisia or Egypt – where most people leaving the country have been heading. On Tuesday, UNHCR said it was particularly concerned for sub-Saharan Africans who have become vulnerable because of suspicions that they are foreign mercenaries. Amid chaotic scenes at the Tunisian border, UNHCR also issued a joint appeal with the International Organization for Migration for a massive humanitarian evacuation for people fleeing Libya into Tunisia.

"With these new waves of uprising and conflict, there is and will continue to be massive new displacement. The world needs to address this moment. We have to give people safe passage, evacuation if needed, and ensure they have asylum. We don't want to look back and find their deaths are on our hands," Jolie said.

The acclaimed actress was speaking from Kabul, Afghanistan, where she has been on a low-profile two-day visit to listen to the problems of returned refugees still struggling to survive and reintegrate almost 10 years after returning from exile.

''As the world's attention shifts to the newest refugee crises, we need to remember that if we don't support people in the long term to really get back on their feet – to feed, shelter and educate their families, to earn a living with dignity, and to participate in meaningful ways in their societies – we will see a continued cycle of instability and new crises,'' Jolie said.

UNHCR is rallying support from donors and other humanitarian and development agencies to redouble their efforts to help returning refugees reintegrate in Afghanistan.

The Maddox Chivan Children's Center Provides Relief to Children Impacted by HIV

Two superstars -- one a world-famous actress and one a world-renowned scientist -- have teamed up to bring aid to vulnerable children around the world.

Oscar winner Angelina Jolie and Harvard researcher Dr. Anne Goldfeld, who co-directs the Global Health Committee, turned a chance meeting into an opportunity to help Cambodian children stricken with HIV and tuberculosis live full, healthy lives.

The two women met while flying into Cambodia in 2004, where Jolie was filming the hit "Tomb Raider" sequel and Goldfeld was returning to provide medical aid to children in need. The conversation the two struck up led to Jolie lending her support and funding for a center to bolster Goldfeld's efforts.

"There, sitting next to me, was Angelina Jolie and Maddox, her son," Goldfeld said of that fateful flight. "I think I was so jet-lagged that I had the temerity to say, 'You're Angelina Jolie, aren't you?'"

Once they arrived in Cambodia, Goldfeld ended up taking Jolie to the dilapidated hospital where she was treating adults and children wasting away from diseases like AIDS and its common co-infection, tuberculosis.

Goldfeld, a professor at Harvard's Immune Disease Institute, also told Jolie that children with AIDS in Cambodia often don't get the care they need to survive, and are often stigmatized and cast out.

According to current estimates, approximately 14,000 Cambodian children are infected with HIV, and mother-to-child transmission of AIDS is one of the major causes of new infections.

After her visit to the hospital, Jolie decided to partner with Goldfeld on a new project to bring relief to Cambodian children. The result is The Maddox Chivan Children's Center, named for Jolie's Cambodian-born adopted son. The daycare facility for children afflicted by and affected by HIV opened in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh in February 2006.

MADRID, Spain, December 17 (UNHCR) – UNHCR Goodwill Ambassadors Angelina Jolie and Jesús Vázquez met in Spain this week and paid tribute to the staff of the refugee agency on its 60th birthday and to the people they help.

"In the week of UNHCR's anniversary, I would like to highlight the strength and courage of the world's refugees and [other] forcibly displaced people who are, for all of us, an example of generosity and dignity," Jolie said during a visit Thursday to UNHCR's Madrid office. "My thoughts go also to the dedicated UNHCR staff, who for many years have risked their lives to protect the lives of refugees."

Award-winning actress Jolie was in Madrid to promote her latest film, "The Tourist," and took the opportunity to meet UNHCR staff and discuss Spain's asylum system, mixed migration flows into the country, resettlement and other important issues. She also heard about plans for the anniversary year.

Jolie met Vázquez, a popular TV presenter in Spain, and shared with him some of her experiences as a goodwill ambassador over the past decade. Since becoming a goodwill ambassador in 2006, Vázquez has been actively supporting awareness and fund-raising activities in Spain on behalf of refugees, including a charity art auction on Wednesday in Madrid.

UNHCR turned 60 on Tuesday. It was founded on December 14, 1950 to help Europeans displaced during World War II and was only expected to be in existence for three years. Today, it works around the world, helps millions of people and has an open-ended mandate.

The 68th Annual Golden Globe nominations were announced this morning by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie and Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck say they're touched and honored to be nominated for several Golden Globe awards for their film "The Tourist."

The three were in Berlin for the premiere Tuesday of the film that was nominated for best picture, best musical comedy actor and actress.

Depp, who was also nominated for his role in "Alice in Wonderland" said he was"very touched by the double nomination.

Jolie said the acknowledgment was an honor, then added "we were laughing because it's the first time that I've been in the comedic category so it's new for me."

German director von Donnersmarck said he was happy with the nomination for "The Tourist," his second film, which opened in the U.S. last week to generally poor reviews.

While admitting “it’s a weird time right now” with the unrelenting attention, Jolie laughed when Lauer asked her whether the very public Jolie could ever “put the genie back in the bottle” and retreat from the spotlight.

Yahoo! Movies has got its hand on a new clip from "The Tourist" which is going to be debuted Stateside this December 10. It features Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, who take lead roles, on a boat where he launches some questions to Jolie before asking her why everyone is trying to kill him.

In another fresh clip, which is released via The Tourist Facebook page, Depp is seen reporting an attempted murder to officials. The man, whom Depp talks to, however does not think the action is a serious issue.

A remake of 2005 French film entitled "Anthony Zimmer", "The Tourist" will see Depp portraying an American tourist named Frank who is having a vacation in Italy to mend a broken heart. Jolie, in the meantime, stars as Elise, a female Interpol agent who is in a mission to locate a criminal with whom she once had an affair.

Against the breathtaking backdrop of Venice, Frank pursues a potential romance but Elise uses him as a dupe to reach her goal. Frank soon finds himself the pursued as he and Elise are caught in whirlwind of intrigue and danger.

Sitting opposite one of the world’s most notorious beauties is an experience that requires some processing. Impressions: (1) She has a seriously filthy laugh. (2) She is graceful, straight-backed, head held high. (3) Her photogenic beauty is mesmerizing in real life. Which is quite disturbing, because it makes you “gaze and gaze” (to borrow Nancy Mitford’s phrase from Love in a Cold Climate). Women who can hypnotize people just by sitting and breathing have a spooky power. Like Princess Diana (though she was not as beautiful as Angelina). I asked her producer, Graham King, at one point if he found the beauty distracting. He said, “In The Tourist?” Me: “On her face!” King: “Oh! One hundred percent.”

She is wearing a little cropped jacket by Neil Barrett, who dresses haute Hollywood, classic pants by Helmut Lang, and Ferragamo flats. Black, black, and black. “As Brad’ll tell you—and my kids—apparently Mommy only wears black,” she says. Because she was a Goth, right? No, she says, it’s utilitarian, it’s practical: “I like to get up so every pair of pants goes with every top, every dress goes with every shoe. I’ve a very tiny closet. Brad’s always laughing at me. Some days, yes, I have the nightgown that looks like a dress that I can sleep in and pick the kids up at school. And maybe take a meeting if I switch into heels.”

She didn’t need heels today. Her choice of location for Vogue’s interview is a coolly hip hotel on Hollywood Boulevard called the Roosevelt, whose restaurant (where we have dinner later) is on “the Marilyn Monroe bridge” overlooking the Hockney pool. Oh! Glamour. On the way here, my cell phone rang and a panicky voice asked, “Where are you? Because Angelina is approaching the hotel, so she’ll be ten minutes early.” (In my entire career, no female actor has ever been early. One man has: John Cleese.) As my driver hurtled us into the hotel car park, access was blocked by two vans flanking an SUV—clearly containing a VVIP—and all I could do was watch the little figure being swooshed up, wafted aloft, and delivered inside by burly escorts. Everyone stood in line to gaze, like parlormaids in Gosford Park.

The level of (a) security and (b) logistical organization that moves the Jolie-Pitt machine probably feels normal to them now. From the inside, Brad and Angelina are two hardworking parents with in-demand skill sets who manage their work/life/family balance as best they can, while fitting in philanthropy on top. From the outside, they’re people who can shut down Toronto. I pick Toronto only because I witnessed Brad Pitt do just that in 1997, for the Seven Years in Tibet premiere. Screaming Bradmaniacs confined him to his hotel room for 48 hours, while costar David Thewlis strolled around unbothered. “For a man, being as beautiful as Brad is almost an affliction,” Thewlis told me at the after-party. When I tell Angelina this tale, her eyes dance and she gets very gurgly. “Well, he’s a handsome man.” Yes! And? “No, I think he’s an extremely sexy—extremely handsome and the most sexy. . . . When I think about him, I just think of the man who’s such a great friend and such an extraordinary father. And that’s when I fall, you know, when I have my moments of getting—whoarr!—caught up in how much I love him . . . it’s usually when I see him with the children.”

Which is often, because he’s pretty hands-on. “We take turns working. One of us is always at home with the kids—always,” says Jolie. “Taking them out to things and being there with them and bringing them to school or to the set to visit Mommy or Daddy.” But “at home” from February to May this year was a villa on the Grand Canal: Daddy was child-wrangling in Venice while Mommy filmed The Tourist. Jolie can barely get her words out about how blissful it was, how the kids loved it, and how fabulously lucky she felt to work while “living in the history of this gorgeous country.”

The Venetian setting makes The Tourist a nice, gift-wrapped holiday movie. The financial skulduggery and beastly villainy has a British accent, and the knowingly high-Hitchcock look has Jolie wearing fabulous clothes (costume designer Colleen Atwood used an original Charles James day dress some people I know would kill for). Plus, Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie go head-to-head for the first time ever. Depp in Venice! Who can resist? Their onscreen chemistry in The Tourist is quite swoony. “I suppose either you spark or you don’t,” Depp told me from the set of Pirates 4.

The Tourist’s director, Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck (a smart and instantly likable man whom we shall call by his given name from now on because “Henckel von Donnersmarck” is just too Almanach de Gotha), was Jolie’s pick. She thought the film should have “a European elegance”; she’d loved The Lives of Others (2006), his extraordinary German-language debut feature. “I couldn’t believe it that he was open to doing it, and then we found out that Johnny was open to doing it. So what was always this tiny idea to do a little film in Europe suddenly became this . . . bigger movie.”

Florian really wanted to work with her, too. Are you kidding? “Literally,” he tells me in a phone call, “she gets every single script that has a female role aged between eighteen and 40—every script. And she just follows her feeling, holds her own counsel. She’s probably the only global megastar that doesn’t even have an agent—she doesn’t even have a publicist.” Mmm. And that thing of gazing and gazing? “You never lose it,” he says swiftly. “I can tell from the way that Brad looks at her that he never loses it.” Florian was intrigued when his birthday fell during filming and Angelina asked what his plans were. He thought she meant dinner. She meant his plans for the next year. “She wanted to hear what I was going to change about myself. Because that’s how she approaches life. She looks into the future.”

She does. Clear away the craziness and tabloid clatter that swirls around the Jolie-Pitt family (or “brand”), and you find a practical woman with terrific forward-planning skills. She plans in all areas: family, movies, humanitarian work, though they intertwine because she is a working mother. “I was feeding the babies”—Vivienne and Knox—“while I was reading the script [of Salt],” she remembers, “and I was feeling very round and lovely and Mom-y, and I’d been living in a nightgown for a very, very long time.” Part of the reason she did it was to get back in shape (“practicing the stunts is where you get your strength back”); another was sex-changing Tom Cruise (for whom it was written—or rumored to have been written). She says, “I felt it was a weird thing that every time you ask for a strong female role, it’s written in this strange way where it uses sexuality far too much. Or it’s all about being a woman and beating a man. So it wasn’t a surprise to me that the only way to do a strong female role properly was to not have originally written for a woman.”

Jolie has an uncanny nose for projects that will get some money into the coffers, between doing things she has a passion for. She smoldered through Tomb Raider 1 and 2 (and there is a generation of 30-year-old men who worship her for them) on the back of Girl, Interrupted, the little movie that made her an Oscar winner. She made Beyond Borders, basically about the work of Médecins Sans Frontières, because she wanted to; it tanked utterly. The movie of hers she likes best is A Mighty Heart. “Possibly because I loved Mariane [Pearl], and Brad produced it, and I think it was a well-done film about something that matters.” Voilà. She picked up a rumored $20 million paycheck from Salt, after which she wallowed happily in The Tourist and began shooting her directorial debut (still called Untitled Love Story as I write), which is about the Bosnian war of 1992–96, one of those foreign wars that many, many people can only vaguely place in geography or history (Bosnia? Herzegovina? Montenegro?), and yet the Siege of Sarajevo was one of the most vicious actions of modern times.

So “because Sarajevo, happily, has been rebuilt,” she and the family were in a rented house on location in Budapest, Hungary, in the runup to the holidays while Mommy was shooting there. Their permanent homes are on three continents (and two hemispheres) because she planned her family’s life that way. The house on stilts in the Cardamom Mountains of Cambodia that she bought for Maddox when he was a baby; the “little place in New Orleans,” where Brad’s Make It Right houses are being built; and the “little place here,” in Los Angeles. Their big place is in the South of France, which is, I think, where she plans to end up. “Hopefully, they’ll go to high school in Aix-en-Provence,” she says. Aix-en-Provence? “It looks like a great place to be a teenager.”

And that is why she does the child-rearing thing that she is most viciously excoriated for: first of all, hiring polyglot nannies in a kind of family language bank (one helper speaks Vietnamese to Pax; another, Cambodian to Maddox. “We have not yet attempted Amharic,” says Jolie—Zahara’s from Ethiopia—“but we will one day”). And second, enrolling all the school-age children at the Lycée Français, where much of the curriculum is in French. This fall, while she was in Hungary filming her Bosnian movie, Maddox, Pax, Zahara, and Shiloh trotted off to school at Budapest’s Lycée Français, picking up exactly where they left off at the Lycée in L.A. How smart is that? Angelina or Brad could make movies in Athens, Bangkok, Caracas, or Düsseldorf (and that’s only A to D) while the kids get on with lessons as normal because the instruction is the same the world over.

Did you want a big family? I ask her. She shrugs and says, “I didn’t know.” Because it’s rare, I say, especially now and here in the West, where really big families seem culturally odd and newsworthy. She looks at me levelly as I burble on about how the popular perception of women who have large broods (polygamists, Octomom) is unfavorable. Her shocked giggles are loud on my voice recorder; she loses her equanimity enough to say, “That sounds horrible.” (Not to mention rude. I can’t believe I dragged in Octomom.) But when everything in the modern world is reducing women’s fertility, compromising their ability to even have children, big families seem, um. . . . She retorts, “I didn’t have all my children.” Three, though? “I only planned for two!” says the mother of twins. “To each his own. It’s one of those things. How you build your family—you have to know what you’re capable of handling and how your children will relate to each other. Maybe if you have one child and that child has a lot of needs, you realize you cannot give more attention to another. Sometimes you just know as a parent. We felt we could handle more children, and we have a very happy, very full home. So.” With the look on her face querying whether my intellect is dull enough that show-and-tell might be better than question and answer, she takes out her white BlackBerry, automatically glances around to check that nobody else can see, and scrolls fiercely. “Wait, where is it, give me a second, I’m a mom, sorry, there’s a lot of them. . . . Now. One of my favorite pictures: This is Brad. Dinnertime.”

Interior, evening, big round table set with plates, in foreground Brad Pitt, three-quarter profile, surrounded by one, two, three . . . four (Jolie snickers as I count aloud), five, six little faces. Me: “You did very well, to even everyone up like that.” She says, “It wasn’t a plan for it to be as even as it turned out.” She takes back her BlackBerry and scrolls again: “My girls [Zahara, Shiloh, Vivienne, all spattered with great gobs of color]—they did some body painting.” They’re adorable. It is hard, she says, to think of having any fewer. I wonder if she’s overrun with cats and dogs and hamsters on top? “Well, someone found a lizard yesterday,” she says. “And Shiloh appeared.” (She checks herself momentarily, saying, “I am sure there’s going to be some comment about this, which fortunately I will not read,” before restarting.) “Shiloh found a dead bird, so she came in and said, ‘Can I have a dead pet?’ And I’m . . . ‘Uh-uh, I don’t think it’s healthy, honey. I think they have to put him in a box,’ and I had to run out to find, like, a taxidermy bird. I just worked it out for her.” Did Shiloh know about taxidermy? “No. But I figured that I couldn’t keep the actual dead bird from the yard, so I swayed her toward one that had been cleaned, at least.” We are both giggling, and Jolie says that Shiloh is indeed “hysterical.” Also that they have a bulldog called Jacques, who lives in their house in France.

And does she cook their dinner? “Sometimes. I’m not the best cook. Pax is a better cook than me. Pax likes to cook. But I try to when I can. Any house that we’re in, we all chip in. But the kids are very sweet . . . so enthusiastic anytime I cook. Especially Maddox; he’s just this little man that’s very supportive of me—it’s like he’s raised me a bit. So I cooked them all breakfast before school this morning, and he has that kind of ‘Thanks, Mom! Good job!’ ”

She starts giggling helplessly and says she didn’t burn the bacon. “I’m getting better at bacon.”

Film, family, and philanthropy are the three pillars of her life. “My children are from the countries that I work in,” she says. “I don’t see my family as a global family. I don’t see it separate. So when I look at my kids, and I wake up and hear something’s happening in Pakistan, I think: It’s Asians, and my children are from that part of the world. Those kids are very much like my kids. So I’m happy to be able to go.”

It was a different-looking, different-sounding Angelina Jolie I saw in BBC reports from flooded northwest Pakistan in early September. (She was between scouting Budapest for her Untitled Love Story and doing publicity for The Tourist.) Asked by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to highlight the plight of people displaced into camps by the floods, she met with women who lost children to the surging water and gave impromptu press conferences in sweaty rooms, loud with angry-seeming men. Back in Los Angeles, she tells me the country with the highest number of refugees in the world is Pakistan. Jolie was appointed UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador in 2001: She does an impressive job for them. She talks about the issues like this is her day job. I tell her Pakistan is a hard country to raise money for: Zardari’s government seems pretty unlovable. She becomes slightly heated: “The president is not the people!” And says, “If you are concerned about security in the world, the last thing you want to do is not give your support to Pakistan and Afghanistan, because that’s the most dangerous thing. That’s the least intelligent thing, as far as I’m concerned, to do.”

It was a tough trip, with security issues. “Because it was so high in the north. . . . I don’t like it when Brad has to worry.” She was happy to be back home safe. “But I got calls from the people that’d asked me to go—from the U.N. to the State Department. They felt it was effective, so I could go to sleep for two days and play with the kids and feel like. . . . ” Effective? What does it mean, effective? She says, “I don’t ask the details. They thought it was effective. I just do the best I can do.”

Angelina Jolie took a break from shooting her directorial debut to take her kids to the park with Brad Pitt in Budapest, Hungary on Friday (Nov. 5).

Pax, nearly 7, and his sisters Zahara, 5, and Shiloh, 4, did their own stunts at the outdoor kiddie park, running from tree to tree where staff experts (and Brad) helped them navigate zip-lines, rope bridges and “high” wires (rigged up a few feet off the ground). Bundled up in sweaters and safety gear, including helmets, the three kids had a brisk, energizing time making memories in the great outdoors.

“Everything is great,” Pitt told UsMagazine.com at the NYC Megamind premiere Wednesday.

He told Extra they plan on having an unconventional Thanksgiving this year.

“I’m not really sure where we’ll be for it, but yeah, it’ll be overseas,” he said. “We’ll whip up a turkey somewhere.”

She's been working non-stop on her directorial debut, and on Sunday (October 17) Angelina Jolie got a supportive visit from partner Brad Pitt in Budapest, Hungary.

And while everything's been running smoothly in Hungary, Ang was recently notified that her permit to film in Sarajevo has been revoked - though those involved in the movie's production expect to receive a new permit very soon.

Edin Sarkic, who's the director of the Bosnian company helping with the project, told ABC News, "We were promised by the Ministry of Culture that the permit will be issued on Monday. It was supposed to be done on Friday, but now it is sure to happen on Monday."

The as yet untitled project is a love story set in the Bosnia's 1992-95 war and Jolie has chosen to shoot some of it in Budapest following difficulties in getting permission to film in Sarajevo.

For the period of filming -- which is scheduled to begin on November 10 and last two weeks -- Jolie has rented a mansion in a fashionable district in Budapest where she is staying with her husband, Hollywood heartthrob Brad Pitt and four of their children.

During her surprise visit to Sarajevo over the weekend to meet with members of Bosnia's interethnic presidency to discuss ways to help thousands of returning war refugees, the actress has confirmed that she is working on a Bosnian War love story which will start shooting in this fall.

"Upon leaving Bosnia and Herzegovina on Saturday, Angelina Jolie stated that she will be in the region working on a film this fall," said the UNHCR, the United Nations refugee agency, for whom Jolie works as a goodwill ambassador. The statement issued on Saturday, August 21 also mentioned, "The film is a love story set during the Bosnian war of 1992-1995, focusing on a couple who meet on the eve of the war and the effect the war has on their relationship."

She has additionally announced that the movie's cast will consist of actors from the various ethnicities of the former Yugoslavia. "I would like to involve as many local people as possible and learn as much as I can," the living partner of Brad Pitt stated as quoted by Reuters.

On her role, national radio claimed Jolie will star in as well as serve as director for the film. However, an article on Allvoices mentioned that the 35-year-old actress will only serve behind the cameras for this untitled Angelina Jolie project.

Angelina Jolie was looking painfully thin as she met with the Prime Minister of Pakistan yesterday.

Jolie is in Pakistan in her role of United Nations goodwill ambassador to raise awareness of the plight of the victims of the recent floods that have devastated the country.

More than 1,500 Pakistanis have been killed and around 20million affected by flooding brought on by the annual monsoon rains last month.
Crops have been devastated and disease is spreading among survivors.

'I am very moved by them and I hope that I am able to do something to help bring attention to the situation for all of the people in need in Pakistan,' Jolie said.

‘This is not just a humanitarian crisis, it is an economic and social catastrophe.

Earlier in the day the actress covered her head up in a black scarf, and did her best to blend in with a group of women she was meeting who had lost their children in the disaster.

Jolie was visiting the Kandaro II Camp in Nowshera, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

'I was shocked especially by how high the flood waters went,' Jolie told reporters. 'In some of the people's houses, it was nine feet high.'

The U.N. hopes Jolie's visit will bring attention and subsequent funds to the country.

Only $294 million of the $460 million in emergency funds requested by the UN has been received so far, despite what Maurizio Giuliano, spokesman for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, calls: 'One of the worst humanitarian disasters in UN history, in terms of number of people that we have to assist and also the area covered.'

'There's lots of speculation about why this one has not gotten the attention it deserves,' Jolie said. 'Even all of the wonderful coverage ... is not getting the response that usually it's able to get.'

Angelina also had some sharp words for a Florida church planning to burn copies of the Quran to mark the ninth anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York City.

'I have hardly the words that somebody would do that to somebody's religious book,' Jolie told reporters in Islamabad after her visit to the refugee camp, according to the Associated Press.

Angelina Jolie in Pakistan to highlight needs of flood victims

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, September 7 (UNHCR) – UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie has been in Pakistan today, highlighting the suffering of millions of flood victims and the need for continuing aid for the displaced.

Jolie is travelling as the personal envoy of UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres. On Tuesday she visited Mohib Banda village in northwest Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region and areas near Peshawar, including the Azakhel Afghan refugee settlement and the Jalozai camp for internally displaced people (IDP).

"It's clear this crisis is far from over," she said. "People have lost everything: their homes, their belongings, their crops and cattle, and their livelihoods. Long after the cameras have gone, people will be struggling to rebuild their lives."

Jolie's visit is her fourth to Pakistan since becoming a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador in 2001. She last visited in November 2005 following the devastating earthquake in northern Pakistan.

On Tuesday, she met people who had been directly affected by the floods, including in Mohib Banda, where some 70 per cent of the homes were destroyed or badly damaged by the swirling waters.

"We will never be able to afford the things we once had, never again," an elderly man, Rehman Gul, told Jolie, as he pointed towards an old plastic fan amid the ruins of his former home. "Since the flooding, flies and mosquitoes are everywhere... all over the children, all over us, everything."

When asked by Jolie to speak of her situation, Gul's wife Zainul said: "How can I burden you with all the things we need. I feel embarrassed." Jolie walked through the village, meeting with families and witnessing at first hand the loss and bewilderment.

"There was a small stream outside the broken homes. It was full of a mix of faeces, flies, old shoes and old clothes that had been recently washed into the water," Jolie said.

The floods that first hit Pakistan in July have affected millions. "We must not forget flooding is not the only trauma plaguing this country," she said.

"They are still rebuilding infrastructure from the earthquake of 2005. They continue to have large numbers of IDPs as a result of the conflict in the north, and host 1.7 million Afghan refugees who still need care and refuge as conflict continues in their homeland. And now, of course, the recent flooding and its aftermath already affecting millions and the looming threat of disease," Jolie continued.

"One problem does not negate the other, one headline should not pull focus from the many complexities of the situation in Pakistan," said the Goodwill Ambassador, stressing the need for continuing efforts to support those in need.

"Over the last three decades, Pakistan has been very generous in hosting what continues to be the largest refugee population in the world. It is now the Pakistani people themselves who are in need of large-scale assistance," Jolie concluded.

UNHCR has delivered help to almost 750,000 people, but continued flooding in many areas of southern Pakistan is creating new challenges for relief efforts in what has already become one of the most complex humanitarian crises of recent times.

Angelina Jolie's schedule is rapidly filling up. Earlier this week, it was revealed that she'll be writing and directing her first feature, a love story set during the Bosnian War, which she'll also produce with Graham King. Now, she may have a new starring role coming up as well, for a movie that King will also produce.

The producer's GK Films is developing a feature adaptation of the 2009 U.K. miniseries "Unforgiven" for Jolie to star in, Deadline reports. A director hasn't been set yet, but "The Usual Suspects" writer Christopher McQuarrie is taking care of the script.

"Unforgiven," not to be confused with the Oscar-winning 1992 Western starring Clint Eastwood, follows a woman who is newly released from jail after serving a 15-year sentence for the murder of two police officers. The killing happened when attempts were made to evict her and her family from their home. Now free, all the ex-con wants is to live in peace, a desire not easily fulfilled thanks to a revenge plot staged by one of her victims' two sons.

The original U.K. version aired as a three-part miniseries early last year. Suranne Jones starred as Ruth Slater, the role that Jolie is up for. Jones has done a fair bit of U.K. television, and is probably best known for her role as Karen McDonald on the soap opera "Coronation Street."

Jolie is having a strong year at the movies. Earlier this summer, she starred in the box-office hit "Salt," a Russian-spy thriller that has so far grossed more than $200 million worldwide. In December she stars opposite Johnny Depp in "The Tourist," a King-produced thriller directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck that was recently moved up from its previously planned 2011 release.

Jolie said in a statement issued by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), for whom she is a Goodwill Ambassador, that shooting for the movie would begin in autumn on the tale of a couple who meet on the eve of the war and the effect it has on their relationship.

"The film is a love story, not a political statement," the statement said.

Jolie arrived on Friday for a surprise visit to Sarajevo and on Saturday met members of Bosnia's inter-ethnic presidency to discuss ways to help thousands of returning war refugees.

Jolie visited returnees in eastern Bosnia in April with her partner Brad Pitt and promised then to come back.

She also said the movie's cast would be comprised of actors from the various ethnicities of the former Yugoslavia.

"I would like to involve as many local people as possible and learn as much as I can", Jolie said.

Hollywood star Angelina Jolie has pledged to "do what she can" for flood-ravaged Pakistan.

The Oscar-winning actress, 35, was asked what she would do in her role as goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) as she promoted her new action thriller, Salt, in London's West End.

"I'm doing what I can. I'm talking to Ambassador [Richard] Holbrooke, the UN and people on the ground about how we can spend our money," she said at the film's premiere in Leicester Square.

Jolie, who arrived without long-term partner Brad Pitt, added: "It's unravelling every minute, it seems to be getting worse so we're trying to keep track of it."

The Changeling star is considering all her options and listening to advisers.

"A lot of people say it is important to visit but maybe in a month or two when the cameras go away - we don't know when is the best time. We're just going to keep on it and listen and take advice from the people on the ground as to what is best to do."

Angelina Jolie makes a cameo appearance in the new documentary Pushing the Elephant, which gives viewers a first person account of Congolese refugee turned human rights activist Rose Mapendo, who is reunited with her teenage daughter after a decade of separation. Rose reunited with her daughter Nangabire in the U.S. and faced the task of building a new future. The documentary follows Rose and Nangabire over the course of a year as they make up for lost time. So how does Angie tie in?

In the documentary, Mapendo commends Angelina, 35 —who serves as a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador — for her humanitarian work during a 2009 UNHCR event in Washington D.C.

The Jolie-Pitt clan knows how to party. Brad and Angie hosted a belated birthday bash for Maddox Saturday morning at Go Kart World, and only RadarOnline.com has all the details.

Maddox, who turned nine on Thursday, was the star of the day. We're told his brother Pax and sisters Zahara and Shiloh were there for the party along with about two dozen other kids.

"They stayed for about two hours," an eyewitness tells RadarOnline.com.
"Brad and Angie were very nice people and only asked other people there not take pictures," the source says
Brad "The Dad" and Maddox, have a history of enjoying fast cars, trucks and three-wheelers together, and today was no exception.

Go Kart World, just south of L.A. in Carson, CA, is a favorite of celeb kart fans including Kanye West.

As you can see, Jolie held onto Zahara and Maddox, while a dapper Pitt was flanked by daughter Shiloh and son Pax. Conspicuous by their absence were the twins, Knox & Vivienne, who turned two on July 12.

In the film, Pitt plays cagey Oakland Athletics general manager Billy Beane, whose innovations have kept his team an annual contender despite a shoestring budget. The film also stars Jonah Hill as Beane’s right-hand man, Paul DePodesta.
